Tire Plug vs. Patch: Which Repair Does Your Tire Need?

A nail hole in a tire is repaired with a plug or a patch. They are not the same repair, and the right one depends on the tire, so a technician has to look at it before anyone can say which one fits.
What Is a Tire Plug?
A plug is a repair that fills the hole left by a nail or screw so the air stays in. On its own, a plug does not tell you what the puncture did inside the tire, which is why the tire gets looked at before it is repaired.
What Is a Tire Patch?
A patch is a repair that covers the hole instead of filling it, usually from the inside of the tire. Either way, the goal is the same: a sealed tire that holds air.
Plug vs. Patch: What Is the Difference?
A plug fills the hole and a patch covers it. Which one fits depends on where the hole is, how large it is and what the tire looks like inside. That is a decision for a technician who has the tire in front of them, not a rule that works for every tire.
How Does the Technician Decide Which Repair Fits?
We look at the tire first. If necessary, we take it off the wheel and check it inside. We tell you which repair it needs before we repair it. Most tire repairs take 15 to 30 minutes from start to finish.

When Does a Tire Have to Be Replaced?
Some damage cannot be repaired. Damage that is too large or in the wrong place, and a tire that has been driven flat, may mean a replacement. Sidewall damage can rarely be repaired. We sell new and used tires, and used tires get a 12-point inspection by experienced technicians. Call (227) 218-5688 to confirm sizes and stock.
